Renewable thermal energy
Biomass energy, built on
fuel quality.
From woody biomass CHP to agricultural residue conversion — TOKEF engineers bioenergy systems that perform across the real fuel envelope, not just the design point.

01 · The practice
Biomass is the most mature renewable thermal fuel — and the most abused by optimistic design.
Biomass plants fail for predictable reasons: fuel supply contracts signed on averages, ash chemistry ignored at design stage, moisture swings that were never engineered for. The technology itself is proven — the discipline around it often is not.
Our biomass practice covers the full chain: fuel sourcing and quality management, combustion and gasification technology selection, CHP integration, ash handling and emissions compliance. We characterize every candidate fuel in the laboratory before any reactor is selected.
Whether the objective is process heat, district energy or power generation, we engineer the system around the fuel that will actually arrive at the gate.
Four parameters decide biomass economics.
These are the values our laboratory measures first — and the numbers every design decision traces back to.
| Parameter | Why it matters | Design consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture content | Every % point of water lowers the achievable gasification temperature and efficiency. | Drying requirement, fuel feed design |
| Ash fusion behaviour | Low-melting ash slag fluidized beds and fouls heat transfer surfaces. | Reactor temperature, bed material strategy |
| Calorific value | Gross and net CV set the energy economics of the entire supply chain. | Plant sizing, fuel logistics economics |
| Chlorine & alkali content | Drives high-temperature corrosion and deposit chemistry. | Materials selection, cleaning train design |
Lignocellulosic fuels as a platform.
Non-food biomass is the feedstock base for a whole family of energy carriers. We engineer the conversion routes that match each feedstock to its highest-value output.
